What this calculator does differently
The astronomical zodiac is not made of twelve identical 30° boxes. The International Astronomical Union notes that zodiacal constellations have different shapes and sizes, and that the Sun’s apparent path crosses thirteen of them, including Ophiuchus.
That distinction is the basis of this true sidereal astrology calculator. Nuastro uses the constellation the body is actually positioned in, rather than resizing every constellation to fit a twelve-part wheel.
NASA Space Place explains the astronomical side of this clearly: modern astronomy recognizes 88 official constellations, and the constellations visible from Earth change as our planet moves around the Sun. NASA also draws a firm line between astronomy and astrology. Nuastro does too. The sky position is calculation. The meaning assigned to that position is interpretation.
Sky & Telescope describes modern constellations as bounded regions of sky rather than just star-pattern drawings. That is important because saying a planet is “in Virgo” astronomically means it lies inside Virgo’s defined region of the celestial sphere.

The chart is not different for the sake of being different. The geometry itself is different.
What you get in your chart
A birth chart is more than a Sun-sign lookup. The true sidereal astrology calculator builds several layers from the same birth data, and each layer answers a different question.

Retrograde status is not guessed from a table of average speeds. Nuastro measures motion from positions sampled one day apart, so a station is treated as a change in actual calculated motion rather than a decorative label.
The Ascendant is different. It depends on where and when the eastern horizon met the zodiac at birth, so a precise time matters. If the time is missing, the planetary placements still have a sky position, but Nuastro does not manufacture horizon angles or house placements to make the result look complete.
That separation is useful when reading the chart. A planet’s constellation answers where it was. A retrograde marker answers how its apparent motion was behaving. An Ascendant or house answers a horizon-based question that requires time and place. The astrological reading comes after those calculations, not before them.
Why your chart may look different
There are three common reasons.

EarthSky’s explanation of signs versus constellations makes the same astronomical distinction: zodiac signs are equal divisions, while constellations are actual bounded regions of the starry sky. Precession has also increased the separation between the familiar sign calendar and the constellations over time.
The ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun across the celestial sphere. The Moon and planets also stay close to this path, which is why the zodiac constellations matter when placing bodies against the background sky.
One of those constellations is Ophiuchus. The IAU includes it among the astronomical zodiac constellations, and EarthSky’s Ophiuchus guide shows why the Sun, Moon and planets can appear in front of it even though it is absent from the ordinary twelve-sign horoscope.

What your birth time changes
Your date is enough to calculate planetary positions for a solar chart. Your birth time and birthplace are what allow Nuastro to calculate the Ascendant, Midheaven and houses.
If you do not know your birth time, Nuastro does not pretend that it knows those angles. The chart can still show the planetary sky, but it does not claim an Ascendant, Midheaven or house placement that cannot be supported.

How to read your results
Start with the placement, not the interpretation.
- Check your Sun. This is the placement most likely to challenge the sign you already know.
- Check your Moon and Ascendant. If you entered a reliable birth time, these often explain why two people with the same Sun placement still have very different charts.
- Look for Ophiuchus. It can contain the Sun, Moon or planets because it lies on the zodiacal path.
- Notice the unequal wheel. A large constellation is not “more important” than a small one. Width is geometry, not a ranking.
If a technical word such as precession or ecliptic is unfamiliar, use the glossary rather than guessing from the name.
A true sidereal astrology calculator can tell you where the placements land. It cannot scientifically prove what those placements mean. Nuastro treats the first as astronomy and the second as astrology, which is interpretation.
