Some signs meet Ophiuchus easily. Others can feel like they are speaking two different emotional languages. And no, putting every pairing under “opposites attract” is not a useful compatibility reading.
In Nuastro’s Ophiuchus compatibility ranking, Cancer comes first. Ophiuchus itself is second, followed by Aquarius, Pisces and Sagittarius. Aries ranks last of the thirteen.
This ranking compares the signs as relationship archetypes. It does not mean every Cancer relationship will work or every Aries relationship will fail. Your complete charts can change the picture dramatically.
The short answer
If you only came for the list, here it is. Ophiuchus’s best match is Cancer, followed closely by another Ophiuchus. Aquarius takes third place.
| Rank | Sign | What defines the match |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cancer | Emotional safety and mutual care |
| 2 | Ophiuchus | Deep recognition and shared intensity |
| 3 | Aquarius | Depth meets independence |
| 4 | Pisces | Emotional understanding and empathy |
| 5 | Sagittarius | Depth balanced by movement |
| 6 | Capricorn | Loyalty backed by action |
| 7 | Virgo | Understanding through close attention |
| 8 | Libra | Connection challenged by avoidance |
| 9 | Scorpio | Strong intensity with trust issues |
| 10 | Leo | Different needs for attention |
| 11 | Taurus | Stability can become resistance |
| 12 | Gemini | Very different emotional rhythms |
| 13 | Aries | Reflection and urgency collide |
A low ranking does not mean “never date this sign.” It means the basic sign-to-sign dynamic may require more translation, patience or adjustment.
Ophiuchus compatibility ranking
Before getting into every match, it helps to understand what Ophiuchus is bringing into the relationship.
In Nuastro, Ophiuchus is water, fixed and ruled by Chiron. Water makes the sign emotionally receptive. Fixed gives it persistence. Chiron adds the symbolic theme of understanding, healing and learning through difficult experiences.
Those are astrological assignments, not astronomical measurements. The astronomical part is the constellation itself. The International Astronomical Union recognizes Ophiuchus as one of the thirteen constellations crossed by the Sun’s apparent path.
The Royal Observatory Greenwich also describes Ophiuchus as the Serpent Bearer and notes the Sun’s yearly passage through it.
Nuastro then interprets placements inside that real region through its own astrological framework. That is where compatibility begins.
For the full sign itself, read Ophiuchus: The 13th Sign Your Horoscope Never Told You. The separate Ophiuchus traits guide goes deeper into the personality side.
Why these signs rank differently
The ranking is not asking which sign is “better.” It asks how easily another sign’s basic relationship style fits Ophiuchus’s.
Ophiuchus tends to do better here with signs that can tolerate emotional depth without rushing it away. It also needs enough independence that care does not turn into control.
That is why the top five are not simply the signs that look most similar on paper.
Cancer offers emotional security. Another Ophiuchus offers recognition. Aquarius brings space and perspective. Pisces brings empathy. Sagittarius brings movement when Ophiuchus gets stuck.
Further down the ranking, the friction becomes more obvious. Taurus may resist changes Ophiuchus thinks are necessary. Gemini may move on from a subject while Ophiuchus is still inside it. Aries may want an immediate decision when Ophiuchus still needs to understand what happened.
That friction is not automatically bad. Sometimes the person who works differently from you is exactly the person who stops one of your habits from going too far.
All thirteen pairings
1. Ophiuchus and Cancer
Best overall match.
Cancer and Ophiuchus start from similar emotional ground. Neither needs much convincing that feelings can matter long after the visible problem is over.
Cancer brings care, protection and emotional safety. Ophiuchus brings the desire to understand what is underneath the feeling rather than only soothe it.
That combination can make hard conversations feel surprisingly safe. One person is willing to stay, while the other makes staying feel comfortable.
The danger is doing too much for each other. Cancer can overprotect. Ophiuchus can take responsibility for fixing what hurts. A strong version of this relationship knows when support means helping and when it means letting the other person handle their own life.
2. Ophiuchus and Ophiuchus
The “you actually get it” match.
Two Ophiuchus placements can recognize each other’s depth almost immediately. Neither is likely to think the other is strange for still thinking about something everyone else forgot three days ago.
That recognition can create closeness quickly. Both may value honesty, emotional complexity and conversations that go past the obvious answer.
The problem is that both can stay too long. A disagreement can become a research project. A feeling can be examined until there is almost nothing left to say.
This pairing is strongest when both people know that understanding and letting go are allowed to happen together.
3. Ophiuchus and Aquarius
One of the more interesting matches.
Ophiuchus goes deep emotionally. Aquarius often approaches the same problem from a distance, asking what makes sense and whether everyone is following assumptions that should be questioned.
These approaches can work extremely well together. Ophiuchus sees what a situation feels like. Aquarius sees the structure around it.
The difference is space. Ophiuchus may want closeness while working through something. Aquarius may need distance before returning with a clear head.
If neither takes that personally, the contrast becomes useful rather than cold.
4. Ophiuchus and Pisces
Soft, intuitive and emotionally aware.
Pisces and Ophiuchus can understand each other without everything having to be explained immediately. Both are comfortable with emotional complexity.
Pisces may accept a feeling before knowing exactly what it means. Ophiuchus is more likely to keep asking until it has a shape and a reason.
That can be beautiful when they balance each other. Pisces reminds Ophiuchus that not everything needs an answer tonight. Ophiuchus helps Pisces put words around something that would otherwise stay vague.
The weak point is boundaries. Empathy becomes unhealthy when both people absorb everything the other person feels.
5. Ophiuchus and Sagittarius
The match that keeps Ophiuchus moving.
Sagittarius can bring exactly what Ophiuchus sometimes lacks: perspective. Ophiuchus may still be examining the problem while Sagittarius is already asking what happens next.
This can stop Ophiuchus from becoming trapped inside its own analysis. At the same time, Ophiuchus can stop Sagittarius from using movement as a way to avoid uncomfortable feelings.
The pair works when freedom does not become avoidance and depth does not become heaviness.
They do not need to process everything at the same speed. They do need to respect that the other person’s speed is real.
6. Ophiuchus and Capricorn
Reliable, serious and stronger over time.
Capricorn may not always meet Ophiuchus with the same emotional language, but it can offer something Ophiuchus values just as much: consistency.
Ophiuchus asks why something went wrong. Capricorn asks what is going to change now.
That combination can make conflict productive. One finds the emotional cause. The other wants proof that the lesson will affect future behaviour.
The risk is making the relationship permanently serious. Not every evening needs to become a meeting about how both people can improve.
7. Ophiuchus and Virgo
Good at noticing what everyone else missed.
Virgo and Ophiuchus can both be interested in the details behind a problem. Virgo notices what is not functioning. Ophiuchus notices what has not been emotionally resolved.
Together, they can be excellent at taking something vague and making it understandable.
The problem is overanalysis. A relationship cannot survive as a permanent improvement project.
Sometimes nobody needs feedback. Sometimes the dishes are simply in the sink and one of you should wash them.
8. Ophiuchus and Libra
Good connection, harder confrontation.
Libra values harmony and mutual consideration. Ophiuchus values getting to the part of the conversation that may not be harmonious at all.
This can make them useful to each other. Libra helps Ophiuchus remember that honesty does not need to be brutal. Ophiuchus helps Libra remember that peace is not always the same thing as resolution.
The tension appears when Libra wants the atmosphere to improve before the issue is finished. Ophiuchus may interpret that as avoidance.
The relationship becomes much easier when disagreement is allowed to exist without being treated as a threat to the bond.
9. Ophiuchus and Scorpio
Deep, intense and not automatically easy.
Scorpio and Ophiuchus are often grouped together because their constellation regions sit beside one another on the Sun’s apparent path. Astronomically, however, they are separate regions.
Sky & Telescope’s guide to the ecliptic explains the path that places Scorpius, Ophiuchus and Sagittarius in this part of the sky.
Astrologically, both signs can handle intensity. That sounds like an obvious match, but intensity multiplied by intensity is not always comfortable.
If either person becomes guarded, the other may start looking harder for what is being hidden. Then both become more suspicious.
This pairing does better with direct questions than tests, hints or strategic silence.
10. Ophiuchus and Leo
They care deeply, but show it very differently.
Leo often wants affection, warmth and appreciation to be visible. Ophiuchus may show care by paying attention to what somebody is struggling with behind the scenes.
Both forms of care are real. They simply do not always look the same.
Leo may wonder why Ophiuchus cannot enjoy the good moment without analysing it. Ophiuchus may wonder why Leo wants reassurance when the relationship already feels secure.
This match improves quickly when both people stop expecting the other to recognize love only in the form they personally prefer.
11. Ophiuchus and Taurus
Stable until somebody needs something to change.
Taurus can give Ophiuchus consistency, calm and a relationship that does not change shape every week.
That can feel safe. But both can also hold on.
Ophiuchus may hold on to a problem until it is understood. Taurus may hold on to the existing arrangement because it feels familiar.
The difficult moment comes when Ophiuchus believes change is necessary and Taurus believes change itself is the problem.
The relationship needs a clear distinction between stability and stagnation.
12. Ophiuchus and Gemini
The conversation can be great until one person wants to stay on the same subject.
Gemini brings curiosity, humour and mental movement. Ophiuchus can enjoy that enormously, especially when it breaks a serious mood.
But the two may process differently. Gemini can move rapidly between angles, possibilities and topics. Ophiuchus may want to stay with one issue until it feels complete.
Ophiuchus may read Gemini’s movement as avoidance. Gemini may experience Ophiuchus’s persistence as unnecessary heaviness.
The relationship needs both kinds of conversation: the quick one that opens possibilities and the slower one that actually finishes something.
13. Ophiuchus and Aries
The hardest match in this ranking.
Aries wants movement. Ophiuchus wants understanding. When a problem appears, Aries may be ready to do something before Ophiuchus has finished deciding what the problem actually is.
That difference can create repeated frustration.
Aries may see Ophiuchus as dwelling on something that should already be over. Ophiuchus may see Aries as reacting before looking beneath the surface.
There is also something useful here. Aries can pull Ophiuchus out of paralysis. Ophiuchus can make Aries pause before an immediate reaction creates another problem.
This pair needs respect for two different stages of problem-solving: first understanding, then action. Fighting over which one should exist is where the trouble starts.
Why Cancer is number one
The top position makes more sense once you look at Ophiuchus’s basic doctrine in Nuastro.
Ophiuchus is water and fixed. Cancer also belongs to the water family in traditional astrological classification. That gives both signs an emotional language at the beginning of the match.
But similarity alone is not why Cancer ranks first. Another Ophiuchus would win if that were the rule.
Cancer offers something complementary. Ophiuchus often wants to understand, repair and work through. Cancer’s symbolism places more emphasis on safety, care and belonging.
One asks, “What happened here?” The other asks, “Do you feel safe with me while we deal with it?”
That is why Cancer takes the first position in this Ophiuchus compatibility ranking.
Why a full chart can change the result
A Sun-sign ranking is useful because it gives you one clean comparison. It is also incomplete.
Two people do not bring only their Suns into a relationship. Their Moons, Mercury placements, Venus placements, Mars placements, houses, angles and aspects can tell a very different story.
The astrological word synastry means comparing two birth charts to see how their placements interact.
That is why an Aries can rank thirteenth here and still have an excellent individual match with an Ophiuchus person. Their complete charts may contain connections that this list cannot see.
Likewise, Cancer ranking first does not guarantee compatibility. A difficult full-chart comparison does not disappear because two Sun signs look good together.
The Nuastro Love Chart compares the actual placements between two people rather than stopping at their sign names.
If you do not know your real-sky placements yet, start with the Nuastro Birth Chart.
NASA Space Place explains how modern astronomy uses constellations as defined regions of the sky. That astronomical map is the starting layer. Compatibility is an astrological interpretation built after the positions are known.
The difference matters because real constellations are not equal 30° slices. Ophiuchus occupies its own region between Scorpius and Sagittarius.
NASA’s Messier 14 page identifies the cluster as an object in Ophiuchus, while its Rho Ophiuchi Webb image identifies another real astronomical region associated with the constellation.
Those sources establish that Ophiuchus is an ordinary astronomical part of the sky. They do not establish who an Ophiuchus person should date.
The real sky underneath the ranking
Nuastro does not create Ophiuchus by forcing a thirteenth equal sign into a twelve-part wheel. The constellation region is measured first.
At the engine’s default reference epoch, Ophiuchus spans about 18.81° along the ecliptic in Nuastro’s boundary calculation. Compare that with Scorpio at about 6.60°, Aries at 24.41° and Virgo at 43.96°.
The ecliptic is the Sun’s apparent yearly path against the stars. It passes through Ophiuchus, which is why the constellation can appear in a real-sky zodiac calculation at all.
This distinction keeps the method clean: astronomy determines where a placement is. Astrology interprets what that placement may mean.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Ophiuchus most compatible with?
Cancer ranks first in Nuastro’s Ophiuchus compatibility list. Ophiuchus comes second, followed by Aquarius, Pisces and Sagittarius. Cancer takes the top position because its emotional and protective relationship style fits well with Ophiuchus’s water, fixed and healing-focused interpretation. A full two-person chart can still produce a different individual picture.
Is Ophiuchus compatible with Scorpio?
Yes, but Scorpio ranks ninth in this list rather than near the top. Both signs can handle emotional intensity, which creates attraction and understanding. The difficulty is that both may become guarded or overly focused on what is happening beneath the surface. Direct communication matters more than trying to read each other’s hidden motives.
Does Ophiuchus compatibility work with 12-sign charts?
Not as a direct sign-for-sign comparison. Nuastro’s real-sky system and a traditional twelve-sign chart use different boundaries, so the same astronomical position may receive a different sign label. Calculate both people in the same zodiac system first. Then compare the placements instead of mixing labels from two different maps.
